Forest School...

Ashton House Nursery provides inspirational hands-on learning experiences within our on-site woodland..

Forest School originated in Scandinavia where children’s contact with nature is considered of great importance. This type of outdoor education focuses on children developing hands-on learning experiences, within a woodland setting. The sessions are taken by our Level 3 practitioner and involve activities such as tool use, tree climbing, den making, exploring plants and wildlife, story-telling and woodland art and crafts. The children also learn how to build and light a campfire, as well as prepare and cook some snacks and meals outdoors.

Forest school sessions develop practical skills and focus on social interactions, communication skills and the physical development of children. The types of activities involved aim to promote children’s resilience, self-esteem, confidence, creativity and independence. These are vital life-skills which provide a solid foundation to progress onto school.

As a setting which is passionate about outdoor learning in the early years, we felt that the Forest School ethos complemented our vision and we had a unique opportunity to develop this on our large site. As well as our current woodland area, we have also planted many trees in one of our fields which we hope will grow to support Forest School activities in the coming years. It is exciting to see our Forest School evolve, with these magical and unique experiences now at the heart of our pre-school provision.
